Body and Mind

My body a bed weight
My mind an inert mass
We shambled off at eight
To attend our son's class

 A circle of middle age
Histories of movement
For that night engaged
In meditative improvement

 In simple exercises
Our bodies flexed and warmed
Faces opposing eyes as
Torsos opposed arms

The lights were dimmed to aid us
As on the floor we lay down
There was music to serenade us
With soothing gentle sound

 Encouraged to relax
I let my vertebrae align
Muscles loosened in my back
Inhibitions fell aside

 I could do naught besides
There lying on the floor
My wife was mortified
When I began to snore

As the lights again grew bright
She gave me a little kick
And I awoke to find
A gap in time that I had missed

And in the after circle time
I had little to share
Only that I'd been present
But hadn't been really there

 Since that night we've agreed
Our solemn promise we have kept
That our son had and has no need
To know through class his old man slept
