Mel's Passion

Waiting in my Subaru outside

The temple for my son

On NPR a man from Sheboygan

Says watching the bloody torture of Jesus

On the big screen

Makes him feel at peace

Perhaps similar treatment of other Jews

Will make him more peaceful still

Former priests and present theologians

Joust and parry dates and bibliographies

The truth somewhere between

I drop off my son safe at home

At least for now

And drive to the store for milk

Mel says that to disbelieve his Passion

Would be un-American

I thought that Mel

Was an Australian

But his dad moved to New York so

Mel would not be a veteran

I see the flag

Outside the store

Caught in a tree

While the wind

Tries to whip it free

We'll just have to wait

And see
