Dinner was an intimate affair
Just for George and Jacques
Determined civility was in the air
And nothing came as a shock
The wine served was Sauvignon Blanc
There were delicacies of every kind
Jacques was characteristically frank
George spoke little but spoke his mind
Chirac said we should recognize
That the logic of power is unstable
Bush said, Aren't those French fries?
We should eat them if we're able
Multilateralism, Jacques advised
Means that all nations are respected
A common denominator, George replied
Is that expectations exceed the expected
When one nation shoots from the hip
Said Jacques, Other countries will do the same
America will not seek a permission slip
Said George, to defend its name
I must warn my friend, said Jacques, when
His plans are not in his best interest
George said, if you don’t' stand with us, friend,
You stand with the terrorists
After dessert the gentlemen parted
No more in agreement than before
George was not broken hearted
When Jacques went out the door
When later asked if he would
Invite Jacques to visit his ranch
George said he surely could
Hire a cowboy if he got the chance
Though such wit may prove expensive
In the long run George meant no harm
If on his charm offensive
He exercised offensive charm
