Leaving Brookline

In spring the Newton signage reads “Tree City, USA”.
Abruptly ends the bike lane I did so enjoy today.
The boundary of conservative demesne, I expect,
edges of the asphalt way frayed with time and blithe neglect.
Yet Dedham’s moonscape thoroughfares, not outdone by any,
ride rodeo rough, so pocked are they with blacktop acne
until we approach the Westwood line, where shamed, does Dedham
perhaps lay down new road? Or maybe Westwood’s Macadam
extends into the town of Dedham's realm and thus obscures
sanguine inattention of under-funded public works.

But now in fall the Dedham roadways glide as smooth as glass
except for manhole covers, while the 1A overpass
construction all but bars the way  in Westwood / Islington.
In Newton the conditions all remain the same great fun
except where roadside brush has taken over the right lane.
Yet often do our psyches line up with the season's change,
as habits break before the frost descends, we reinvent
ourselves and find that of beloved paths we must repent.
Now Brookline, Newton, Roslindale, East Dedham and Westwood
provide new riding surfaces.  The roads are pretty good!
